Ash, Soot and Your Car's Paint: Cleaning Up After Bonfire Night

1 min read

If your car was parked anywhere near a bonfire or fireworks display this week, you may find a fine layer of ash, soot or firework debris on the paintwork the next morning. It looks harmless, but wiping it off dry is one of the quickest ways to put fine scratches into your paint.

Don't wipe it dry

Ash is gritty. Dragging a cloth or your sleeve across it rubs that grit into the clear coat. Leave it until you can wash the car properly.

Rinse first

Start with plenty of water to lift off as much loose ash and debris as possible before anything touches the paint.

Use proper car shampoo

Washing-up liquid can strip wax and protection. Use a car shampoo and a clean wash mitt, and rinse the mitt often so you're not dragging grit around.

Check for burn marks

Look closely at the bonnet, roof and windscreen for small marks from hot debris. Spots in the paint are worth getting looked at early before they spread.

Clear the scuttle and wipers

Ash and leaves collect at the base of the windscreen. Clear them out so drains don't block and your wipers don't smear grit across the glass.

Don't forget the air filter

If you've been driving through a lot of smoke, it's worth checking your cabin filter at your next service, especially if you notice a smoky smell when the fan's on.

Now's a good time to get your car ready for winter, too. Our winter check covers your battery and charging system, tyres, wipers and screenwash, coolant and every light, so you're not caught out on the first frosty morning.
