Common questions
- How often does my car need an MOT?
- The first MOT is due when the car turns three years old, then every year after that. It applies regardless of mileage — a car doing very few miles still needs testing annually.
- Can I have the MOT done early without losing time?
- Yes. Test it up to one month minus a day before the current certificate expires and the new one runs from your existing renewal date, so you lose nothing. Leave it past expiry and the new date is set from the test instead.
- What are the most common MOT failures?
- Lighting and signalling, suspension, brakes, and tyres account for the large majority of failures — and a good share of those are cheap things like a blown bulb or a worn wiper blade that a quick check beforehand would have caught.
- What is the difference between an MOT and a service?
- An MOT is a legal roadworthiness test with a pass or fail; it does not change anything on the car. A service is preventative maintenance — oil, filters and wear items replaced before they cause problems. Doing the service first often prevents an MOT failure.
- How do I check when my MOT is due?
- Look it up free on the GOV.UK MOT history service with just your registration. It shows the expiry date, plus every past result, advisory and recorded mileage — useful for spotting a recurring fault or a mileage discrepancy.
- Can I drive my car if the MOT has expired?
- Only to a pre-booked MOT test or to a garage for repairs. Otherwise you risk a fine of up to £1,000, your insurance may not be valid, and you cannot renew the tax without a current MOT.
