Cars that sit still still fail MOTs
A car doing a couple of thousand miles a year is not a car with nothing wrong with it. Brake discs corrode where the pads rest, fluid absorbs moisture on a calendar rather than a mileage basis, and tyres age out — rubber hardens and cracks regardless of tread depth, and there is a four-digit date code on every sidewall telling you the week and year it was made. Plenty of low-mileage cars arrive with legal tread on tyres that are well over a decade old.

- Do you MOT cars in Ascot, Sunningdale and Sunninghill?

- My car barely gets used. Does it still need an annual MOT?
- Yes. Once a car is three years old the MOT is annual regardless of mileage, and the only way out of it is a statutory off road notification with the car kept off the public road entirely. Low use also brings its own faults, particularly corroded brakes and ageing tyres.
- How old is too old for a tyre with plenty of tread left?
- There is no single legal age limit for cars, but the rubber degrades over time and many manufacturers suggest replacement at around ten years. Check the four-digit code on the sidewall — 2419 means the 24th week of 2019. If yours are cracking or the date is well back, we will show you rather than just telling you.
- How do I check when my MOT is due?
- Look it up free on the GOV.UK MOT history service with just your registration. It shows the expiry date, plus every past result, advisory and recorded mileage — useful for spotting a recurring fault or a mileage discrepancy.
- Can I drive my car if the MOT has expired?
- Only to a pre-booked MOT test or to a garage for repairs. Otherwise you risk a fine of up to £1,000, your insurance may not be valid, and you cannot renew the tax without a current MOT.
