MOT & servicing

MOT and servicing in Hook

We MOT and service cars for Hook, Hartley Wintney and Odiham drivers at our Bracknell workshop, about sixteen miles up the M3 from junction 5. Many of the cars we see from this side are big-mileage motorway commuters, and those wear in their own predictable ways.

  • Quoted before we start

If the car needs work you hear the cost first. Nothing gets done on the assumption you would have said yes.

  • Failures and advisories separated

We tell you what has actually failed and what is only wearing, so you can decide what to spend and when.

  • Repaired in the same workshop

Anything found can usually be put right while the car is already with us, rather than booking a second visit elsewhere.

Stone chips and the windscreen rules

Motorway miles mean stone chips, and windscreen damage is a common MOT fail. The test looks at a zone 290mm wide centred on the steering wheel: damage bigger than 10mm in that area fails. Across the rest of the area the wipers clear, the limit is 40mm. A small chip can often be repaired cheaply through your insurer without affecting your no-claims, but it spreads, especially in cold weather, so get it done before it becomes a crack and a new screen.

We also cover Hartley Wintney, Odiham, North Warnborough, Rotherwick and Newnham, all within a short run of the workshop.

MOT and servicing in Hook — common questions

Is it worth driving from Hook for an MOT?
If you want the test and any repairs done in one place by people who will explain them honestly, many of our customers think so. It is about sixteen miles on the M3, and most MOTs are done the same day.
Will a windscreen chip fail my MOT?
It depends on where it is and how big. Over 10mm in the zone directly in front of the driver fails, and over 40mm anywhere else the wipers clear. Get small chips repaired early before they grow.
My car does a lot of motorway miles. Does it need servicing more often?
Motorway miles are actually gentle on an engine, but the mileage adds up fast, so follow the mileage interval rather than the time interval. We will check what your schedule says and book you in accordingly.
How do I check when my MOT is due?
Look it up free on the GOV.UK MOT history service with just your registration. It shows the expiry date, plus every past result, advisory and recorded mileage — useful for spotting a recurring fault or a mileage discrepancy.
Can I drive my car if the MOT has expired?
Only to a pre-booked MOT test or to a garage for repairs. Otherwise you risk a fine of up to £1,000, your insurance may not be valid, and you cannot renew the tax without a current MOT.
