Kerbs, potholes and hidden damage
Town driving is where tyres get hurt — a hard kerb strike or a deep pothole can damage the internal structure with almost nothing to see from outside. What to look for is a bulge or blister in the sidewall, which means the casing cords have failed and the tyre can let go without warning. That is an immediate replacement, not something to watch. Kerbing also knocks the tracking out, and the giveaway is a new tyre wearing on one edge only within a few thousand miles.

- Either works. The size is moulded into the sidewall, like 205/55 R16 91V. If the car has had different wheels fitted at some point, the sidewall is the more reliable of the two.
