The mornings around Bracknell and Ascot are getting colder, and the first frosty start always catches someone out. Most winter breakdowns we see come down to the same handful of things. Here's what to check this week.
1. Battery
Cold weather is hard on batteries, and one that's three to five years old can give up on the first freezing morning. If the engine turns over slowly, get it tested before it leaves you stranded.
2. Tyres
The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, but grip on wet roads drops off well before that. Check your pressures too, as they fall when the temperature does.
3. Wipers and screenwash
Smeary or juddering blades won't clear road spray on the A329(M) or M4. Top up with a proper winter screenwash so it doesn't freeze in the bottle.
4. Coolant
Antifreeze protects your engine from freezing in winter and overheating in summer. If the level is below the minimum mark, or it hasn't been changed in years, it's worth a look.
5. Lights
Walk around the car with the lights on. A blown bulb is a quick fix, and it can be an MOT fail.
Not sure where to start? Bring it to our workshop on London Road and we'll give it a once-over.
