Everyone worries about ice, but autumn has its own hazard: wet leaves. On the tree-lined roads around Ascot, Winkfield and Swinley Forest, a layer of wet leaves can be nearly as slippery as ice. Add standing water and mud, and your tyres are doing a lot of work.
The 20p test
Put a 20p coin into the main grooves of your tyre. If you can see the outer band of the coin, your tread may be close to the 1.6mm legal limit and it's time to get it checked.
Other things to look for
- Cracks, bulges or cuts in the sidewall
- Uneven wear on one edge, which can point to an alignment problem
- Pressures below what's listed in your handbook or on the door frame
On the road
Leave a bigger gap, brake gently and early, and slow down on bends where leaves pile up.
